I find it interesting how British special forces during WW2 included so many other nationalities. I recall from Ben McIntyre's book about the establishment of the SAS during the North Africa campaign that they had to include quite a lot of French soldiers per request from de Gualle.

I think those that left the occupied countries felt that by joining the commandos or special forces that that would be the quickest way of getting back home and taking on the enemy. As the war progressed the SAS expanded to include such people with the formation of the 3rd and 4th French SAS, and the 5th Belgian SAS.
