The commando RMOs in the Second World War are the subject of a chapter of the book I am working on at the moment. I have all standard and many other sources but if any members have unseen diaries etc I would love to hear from you.

Hugh Smith 45 Commando RMO before he was replaced by Tulloch is a gap in my knowledge.

Publication date 25/26.

You can find my work on X / WW2TV / Britain at War magazine / The Field and @Fonthillmedia

Many thanks in advance

Hi Stephen,

Hugh Smith is mentioned in the following, which you probably have, but if not:

https://www.combinedops.com/45%20Royal%20Marine%20Commando.htm

See D-Day + 1

“Throughout the confused street fighting in Franceville the Medical Orderlies, led by Captain Smith and Sgt Curren, had worked wonders in tending the wounded under fire and bringing them into cover. Captain Smith later received the MC for his gallantry during this action.”

He's also in the Commando Veterans Archive with a reference to his MC citation:

https://www.commandoveterans.org/HughSmithRAMC_45RMCommando

Lt J.A. Tulloch (attached from 10 IA Commando) is listed as M.O. in the 1st Special Service Brigade War Diary dated 1st July 1944.

However, I can't see any mention of either in the 45 RM Commando War Diary for June 1944.

Regards

Ian
